Interview Summary
Dave Fiuczynski, guitarist and professor at Berklee College of Music, discusses his youth, including his parents’ interracial marriage and his primary education in Germany; his early adoption of guitar; and the development of his musical style as a student at New England Conservatory, including focused study of microtonality with jazz composer and saxophonist Joe Manieri. Fiuczynski describes the development of his career, from gigging and touring based out of New York to leadership of the groups Screaming Headless Torsos and KiF. In addition, Fiuczynski discusses fretless plucked instruments, including his double-neck guitar.

Biographical Note
Guitarist and educator David Fiuczynski (1964– ) was born in Newark, New Jersey, and spent part of his childhood in Germany, where he began playing piano and guitar. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the New England Conservatory of Music, studying with Mick Goodrick, Dave Holland, Ran Blake, George Garzone, Bob Moses, George Russell, and Joe Maneri. Fiuczynski has led the groups Lunar Crush, Screaming Headless Torsos, KiF, Black Cherry Acid Lab, and Hasidic New Wave, and taught at Mannes School of Music (from 1998), The New School (from 1999), and Berklee College of Music as Professor of Guitar, as well as Artistic Director of the Planet MicroJam Institute (from 2012).
