Scope and Contents

The American Mass: Music for the Holy Eucharist, Rite Two (circa 1984) series comprises scores for Music for the Holy Eucharist, Rite Two, also called the American Mass, composed in honor of Reverends David Boyd and Howard Marshall of Trinity Episcopal Church in Janesville, Wisconsin. The series contains a mix of handwritten manuscripts and photocopies (some of which are annotated), as well as a program for the work’s premiere in 1984. Supplied folder titles or other explanatory notes by processing staff are enclosed in square brackets. All the material in this series is undated but it presumed to date around 1984, the year the work premiered. Recorded audio for the premiere is available in Series 4, Sound Recordings.

Collection is open for research by appointment. Advance notice is required for access because materials are stored offsite. Sound recordings have not been transferred. Patrons may view an item’s original container and/or carrier, but the recordings themselves are not available for playback due to preservation concerns; patrons may request access to listening copies via onsite appointment, however recordings on obsolete formats may not be available.
