Scope and Contents
The James P. Goss papers contain materials created and/or compiled by author James Goss over the course of writing the books Vinyl Lives I and Vinyl Lives II, which document the perspectives of various independent record store owners and collectors regarding the rise, decline, and resurgence of record sales. Unpublished materials include the author's research files: interview outlines and questions, handwritten chapter outlines, handwritten interview transcripts, project notes, biographical information, correspondence, and interview recordings on audio cassette (30-60 minutes each). Published materials include copies of both books and an article.

Conditions Governing Access
Collection is open for research by appointment. Advance notice is required for access because materials are stored offsite.
Interview recordings on audiocassette have not been transferred. Patrons may view an item’s container and/or carrier, but the original recordings are not available for playback due to preservation concerns. Patrons may request access to listening copies via onsite appointment with advanced notice. Contact Archives staff for further information.

Biographical note
Author James Goss was born in Salem, Massachusetts in 1954 and was raised in South Florida. He is married to author Virginia Aronson, and they live with their son. He spent much of his youth playing in garage bands, and he also worked with the Cambridge-based band Bijou Link. After moving the San Francisco Bay area in 1969, he received his basic education in rock ‘n’ roll, blues, and jazz. Later he went on to study jump blues, bluegrass, country, and western swing.
Goss has written works for Elmore Magazine and The Audiophile Voice, and his work has also appeared in Wood & Steel and San Francisco. His book Pop Culture Florida (2000) details the histories of many Florida-based musicians. Vinyl Lives (2010), Vinyl Lives II (2013) both include interviews of record store owners and collectors following the decline and resurgence of LPs.

Materials include the author's research files: interview outlines, recordings, and transcripts; handwritten chapter outlines; project notes; biographical information; correspondence; as well as copies of Goss's books and other writings.

Materials are arranged into three seriess: Series I: Files, further subdivided into subseries by book and organized by chapter number; Series II: Interview recordings, further subdivided by book; and Series III: Published materials.
