Scope and Contents

This collection is comprised of over 700 audio reels containing recordings of faculty and student projects, visiting artist clinics, master classes, lectures, annual commencement concerts and ceremonies, and selected student performances. Some of the major figures represented include: Herb Pomeroy, Arif Mardin, Delfeayo Marsalis, Chick Corea, Gary Burton, and Phil Wilson. A more detailed internal inventory is available upon request.

Conditions Governing Access

Collection is open for research by appointment. Advance notice is required for access because materials are stored offsite.

Recordings have not been transferred. Patrons may view an item’s original container and/or carrier, but the materials themselves are not available for playback due to preservation concerns. Patrons may request access copies or listening appointments, however due to format obsolescence and condition, recordings many not be available for transfer. Contact Archives staff for further information.

Berklee Event Recordings Access Policy

Berklee Archives can only grant personal copies of event recordings to event participants. Remote streaming access is restricted to the Berklee community with a Berklee OnePass login; requests from patrons outside the Berklee community will require an on-campus appointment to view.

Administrative History

The mission of the Music Production and Engineering (MP&E) department at Berklee College of Music is to educate and train students in the art and craft of music production and engineering. Berklee’s MP&E department was formally established in 1983, although the college offered its first course in audio recording in 1972, followed in 1977 with the establishment of the department of audio recording and the accompanying major.
