Collection of Berklee College of Music academic publications, 1949-2017
Scope and Contents
The Collection of Berklee College of Music academic publications has been collated from a number of different sources, primarily the Berklee Office of Public Information records by Alma Berk (BCA-013) and a donation from Berklee's Vice President for Academic Affairs/Vice Provost, S. Jay Kennedy. Though the bulk of the collection are course catalogs for student registration (known throughout the years as catalogs, registration manuals, career grids, and bulletins), the collection also contains other publications put out by Berklee College of Music, such as newsletters, convocation reports, and prospectuses. The course catalogs cover 42 of Berklee's first 59 years of operation, and these catalogs provide great insight into both the roots and growth of Berklee's curriculum.

Biographical / Historical
Berklee College of Music was founded by Lawrence Berk in 1945, under the name Schillinger House. Though Berk's initial intention was to train musicians in the Schillinger System of Musical Composition (SSOMC), Schillinger House soon outgrew its name and was renamed Berklee School of Music in 1954; subsequently, the school was again renamed Berklee College of Music in 1970. An ever-expanding community, Berklee opened its first international campus in Valencia, Spain, in 2012 and underwent a historic merger with The Boston Conservatory in 2016. The core curriculum of arranging, composition, and ear training still exists today, and can be seen in course catalogs from the 1940s through the present day.
